Frequently asked questions

Practical questions

What does ONVZ’s Private Health Services entail?

Private Health Services is a new service provided by ONVZ. This highly personal service is a supplementary service for people insured with ONVZ (with an invitation).  As a Private Health Services participant, you will always have the best possible access to top-rated health care in the Netherlands and abroad, a permanent Private Health advisor who gives you complete peace of mind and, if desired, advice on lifestyle and vitality, useful health check-ups and objective expert advice and second opinions.

What will the subscription cost after the pilot? What will be the monthly/annual fee?

The services are provided free of charge during the pilot period. The subscription fee after the pilot has not yet been determined exactly. These fees will be set in May 2026. You will be informed of them well in advance.

How fast can my Private Health advisor respond? Will they be available 24/7?

Once the pilot has started, ONVZ’s Private Health Services will be available by telephone on working days. We will respond to your question within 24 hours. More information is available on the contact page.

In an emergency, we recommend that you call 112 directly. For acute health care, you can contact your general practitioner, the closest hospital or – if you are abroad – the SOS Emergency Centre.

Should I visit my general practitioner first or can I contact you right away?

Your general practitioner remains the first point of contact for your health-care needs. If you have any questions before or after visiting your general practitioner, you can contact us with those. If you have any questions about the best possible access to top-rated health care in the Netherlands and abroad, lifestyle and vitality, useful health check-ups and objective expert advice and second opinions, you can also contact us. In an emergency, we recommend that you call 112 directly. For acute health care, you can contact your general practitioner, the closest hospital or – if you are abroad – the SOS Emergency Centre.

Who can I contact if I need help with my registration or if I have questions?

You can contact us on the contact page.

In which countries do you have access to top-rated health care? Is this everywhere, or just certain countries?

We have an extensive international network, both in the Netherlands and abroad. Based on your specific health-care needs, we will look for the most suitable health-care provider and support you in arranging everything to get there. If you have any specific wishes, your Private Health advisor will be happy to help you consider your options.

About data and expertise

How do I know for sure that your data is reliable? Who validates this?

We have a special team for this within ONVZ’s Private Health Services that monitors data quality. We validate the health-care quality data periodically and using various methods: we use specific quality data, peer reviews, our own insights at ONVZ Zorgverzekeraar and a medical advice team to decide on the most suitable options for you.

What if you and my general practitioner recommend different specialists?

We want to help you make the choice that suits you best based on careful considerations. While general practitioners often have a regional focus and experience, we look at all of the Netherlands and abroad. Transparency in quality and your own freedom of choice are paramount to us.

Do you also have data on new/experimental treatments?

We have access to medically sound and approved experiments through our partner network. These are often subject to acceptance criteria, so you will have to meet those. Your own attending doctor will be able to assess this. If you are unsure for any reason or want this to be investigated further, the best route is to have a consultation with a specialist through ONVZ’s Private Health Services. Do note, however, that this is subject to an additional fee.

Scope of the service

Does your advice apply to all health problems? Does it include mental health problems?

We collect data on health-care quality for almost all frequently occurring medical conditions, including mental health. If we don’t yet have the data for a certain condition, we will find out for you what the most suitable options are, so you can be treated properly and quickly.

What if I am dissatisfied with the service?

If you are dissatisfied with the advice you receive from ONVZ’s Private Health Services, please let us know as soon as possible. We will do everything we can to help you further to your full satisfaction. If all else fails, you can also file a complaint via our contact page.

Can you also help in case of urgent care/acute situations?

In an emergency, we recommend that you call 112 directly. For acute health care, you can contact your general practitioner, the closest hospital or – if you are abroad – the SOS Emergency Centre. Afterwards, we will of course be able to help you with further treatments and recovery support, for example.

Does this also apply to my partner or children (who may no longer live at home)?

If you have received a personal invitation and your family members are also insured with ONVZ, they will also be able to use the service. Your partner and/or children aged 12 and over will all get their own accounts and be able to discuss their wishes and needs during an intake with a Private Health advisor. You can also have the introductory consultation together with a family member.

About the pilot

When will I be able to use this new service?

A select group of persons insured with ONVZ has received an invitation. We have selected a group of customers in the central Netherlands, Amsterdam and Rotterdam/The Hague regions.  As a person insured with ONVZ, you will be able to participate in the Private Health Services pilot after registration and activation of your account. The pilot phase runs from mid-October 2025 to 1 October 2026 at the latest.

What is free of charge during the pilot and what is not?

During this pilot phase, you won’t pay anything for the advice, guidance and practical support you receive from your Private Health advisor. Access to reliable and validated information about the quality of health care is also free of charge during this phase. Your Private Health advisor will always offer various options and inform you in advance whether the treatment costs are covered by your ONVZ health-care plan, so you can decide for yourself whether you want to pay the additional costs. You might also purchase additional services that are not covered by your insurance. Your Private Health advisor will always explain how these services work, including possible costs, so you know where you stand beforehand.

Why is the service being offered as part of a ‘pilot’?

In the coming period, we will be investigating how we can optimise the implementation of our Private Health Services and how we can expand our services. We will also be investigating whether there is enough market demand to introduce this service nationally with a paid subscription model. This free pilot will end on 1 October 2026 at the latest. We will inform you well in advance if we end the pilot sooner. We will consult with you and decide on how to handle any programmes that may be ongoing. In that case, support can be taken over by ONVZ’s ZorgConsulent advisors.

I haven’t received an invitation, but I do want to take part. Is this possible?

The number of participants is limited during the pilot. If one of your family members has received an invitation and you are insured with ONVZ, you will be able to register.

If you haven’t received an invitation, but still want to take part in the pilot, you can sign up and you will be placed on a waiting list. You will be informed if a place becomes available.

Can I end my participation early?

Yes, you can cancel your participation in the pilot at any time. Please contact your Private Health advisor to do this. Your account will then be deactivated.

Trust

Why is ONVZ developing this new service?

We notice that many people with important health-care issues often feel lost in a labyrinth of health-care providers, waiting lists and unclear options. The ageing population and staff shortages are also making access to health care more difficult. As a First-Class Health Insurer, ONVZ wants to do something about this. We are convinced that the quality of and access to health care can and should be more transparent, and that people should always have freedom of choice. This is why we’re developing Private Health Services.

Who has access to my medical data?

We greatly value your privacy and ensure that your data is handled securely and carefully in accordance with ONVZ’s privacy statement. Access to your medical data is strictly protected in accordance with Dutch privacy legislation. You will of course be able to access it yourself through your own digital environment. You can only make information available to your Private Health advisor by giving permission yourself. Medical information will never be shared with third parties without your permission, nor with ONVZ Zorgverzekeraar. Part of our service is that our Private Health advisors are trained in and used to being discreet in how they handle all the information they receive while providing the service.

Is Private Health Services only available to a small group of private individuals?

Our mission is facilitating transparency, freedom of choice and access to the best possible health care as much as we can for every person in the Netherlands who cares about their health. The development of this service is expensive. Our goal is to make the service gradually available to everyone who values good health care and their health.

Who is paying for this service?

This service will be free of charge in the pilot phase, but will eventually become a paid subscription. This means that the users themselves will contribute to the stricter requirements and wishes they have for their health management. There are no strings attached and your participation will not be renewed automatically after the pilot.

What does this service mean for the capacity of health care, which is already scarce?

Health care is a scarce commodity in the Netherlands. We believe it is important to manage this as carefully and responsibly as possible. We use various methods for this.

We check where the waiting times for top-rated health care are shortest for our customers; we don’t allow our customers to skip the queues.

We aim for the most efficient use of health-care capacity, so that less of it is wasted. We do this, for example, by using capacity that suddenly becomes available due to last-minute cancellations. This is not just a positive thing for you as a participant, but also for health-care providers.

We are committed to proactive health management (working on your health without or despite symptoms) to ensure that health-care needs can also be prevented.

We support customers who request health check-ups, so that these are used appropriately and do not lead to unnecessary diagnostics and treatment.

Are health check-ups a responsible method?

Prevention is better than cure. This is why more and more people are getting interested in health check-ups. Good health check-ups can boost the urgency of having a healthier lifestyle and help to recognise severe illnesses early. But some medical professionals and politicians have also criticised them. This criticism is mainly aimed at the affordability of and burden on the Dutch health-care system as a whole. A careful assessment of the results and high-quality support for people stepping into the health-care system are therefore important to us, in addition to selecting partners who guarantee responsible services by recognised professionals. We are convinced that this approach will not create any feeling of unrest among our customers, nor any additional burden on the health-care system.
